However, the month of January was even worse. Here, sales of pure electric cars fell by as much as 55 percent. A total of 263,844 new cars were registered in Germany in March. This is 6.2 percent fewer cars than the same period last year.
Electric cars made up just 11.9 percent of the market in March. This even though the car factories tried and still try to entice with big discounts on the cars. In March last year, Germans bought an electric car in 15.9 percent of all new car purchases.
– The demand for electric cars is currently very low. And this despite the high discounts that many car brands have given and are giving to compensate for the canceled tax discount, says analyst Constantin Gall, according to the French news agency AFP.
Despite the decline in the sale of electric cars, German Transport Minister Volker Wissing stated on Thursday this week that it is still the government's goal that there should be 15 million electric cars in Germany by 2030.
But that goal must not be achieved with state support, emphasized the minister, who does not believe that this is the right way to drive a market forward.
