What is not allowed here? Every fifth driver ignores the sign

New figures show that one in five motorists ignores the stop sign. Even if it costs a seriously big fine if the police see it.

Almost every fifth motorist ignores the stop sign in traffic. Even if it indicates an unconditional right of way and that it is a requirement that everyone stop for it.

This is shown by a new investigation based on sample checks from 13 localities, which Riksförbundet M Sweden has carried out.

However, the result is somewhat better than when a similar survey was carried out in 2022. But it is not immediately impressive that 19 percent of motorists blow past the stop sign.

Since the first survey in 2013, when as many as 32 percent of road users 'overlooked' the stop sign, the situation has improved somewhat. But progress is slow. And this year's results show that there is still a great need to educate drivers, M Sweden believes.

Not only does it put other road users at risk. It also costs DKK 2,000 in the stall and a cut in the choir card if the police see it.

– Every time a road user ignores the stop signs, they expose themselves and others to unnecessary dangers, says Heléne Lilja, communications and community manager at the Swedes' answer to FDM, M Sweden.

Among drivers, 20 percent ignore the stop light. But the situation is actually even worse among cyclists. Here, more than 50 percent favor the unconditional right-of-way. Among taxi drivers who, if at all, live off their choir card, the figure is 'only' three percent.

Much apropos of cyclists, a new investigation by the Accident Commission shows that cyclists themselves are to blame for every third traffic accident. Read more about it here
