Volvo's engine supplier makes gasoline engines for electric cars

Chinese Volvo's engine partner Aurobay has sent a gasoline engine for electric cars on the street. The small motor acts as a range extender.

If you can't live with the electric car's often modest range in the real world, there is actually something to do.

The solution, Aurobay, which, like Volvo, is owned by Chinese Geely, believes it has found a solution. Namely a small internal combustion engine.

Equipped with one that is available both as diesel, petrol and for biofuel, there is practically more range to be had.

– Our Power Delivery Unit is a pragmatic solution designed to solve the real challenges in electric car design and functionality.

– By making it possible for choirs to charge while they are singing, we make electric cars more practical and appealing. Ultimately, the engines facilitate a change in how cars are perceived and used, says Aurobay's managing director Michael Fleiss in a press release .

However, Volvo's engine supplier is not alone in this idea. At Mazda, the wankel engine has been revived precisely for that reason.

The Japanese use the special engine in the small electric car MX-30. With a displacement of just 800 cubic meters, the engine delivers up to 75 horsepower. But it only makes electricity.
