Volvo turns around – will build an electric car with a petrol engine

This week, Volvo's management said that they are dropping the goal of only building electric cars in 2030. Now the electric car will come with a petrol engine.

Volvo calls it 'a long-distance hybrid'. But in reality it is an electric car connected to a small petrol engine.

– A long-distance plug-in hybrid is the best of both worlds, says Volvo's product and strategy manager Erik Severinsson.

In addition, the Volvo top confirms that the regular hybrids and the plug-in hybrids will be updated. So at least get a facelift. These are the following models: XC40, XC60, V60, S90 and V90.

– We believe that plug-in hybrids and long-distance hybrids are an important product for the future for those who are not ready to go fully electric.

– We believe that it is important for growth in the next few years, says managing director Jim Rowan in connection with Volvo Car's capital market day at the World of Volvo in Gothenburg.

Volvo has said that it will introduce five new electric cars to the public in the next few years, although it will now continue to build cars with internal combustion engines.

To clean up the problems that have plagued a number of the cars Volvo has recently presented, the brand will simplify its way of building. Specifically, the brand's cars must be built on a single platform called SPA3.

– We expect the EX60 to be our next high-volume model. It will be the first car on the SPA3 platform and a new common software system. It must be built here in Gothenburg for the global market, says Erik Severinsson.

Volvo are not the only ones who have come up with the idea of electric cars with a petrol engine. Mazda does exactly the same in the small SUV MX-30 R-EV. And even with a Wankel engine, which otherwise has not been in series production since 2008.
