The diesel engine is not as dead as many would like. And now Volvo has even received an award for record-low fuel consumption in trucks.
Volvo Trucks has received the Green Truck 2025 award for record-low diesel consumption.
It was the Volvo FH Aero model with a 420 hp D13 engine that achieved an average fuel consumption of 21.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers in the test.
The truck that participated is described as Volvo's most aerodynamic model to date and is equipped with, among other things, camera-based mirrors to reduce wind resistance even further.
The model uses Volvo's D13 diesel engine with I-Save, which is a combination of driveline components and software functions developed specifically to lower diesel consumption as far as possible.
The Volvo FH Aero came to market in early 2024 and features a new aerodynamic cab design.
Virtual mirrors save 5 percent of fuel consumption
According to the truck brand, measures such as the digitalized side mirrors can help reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 5 percent compared to a regular FH model.
The new Volvo FH Aero series is available in four versions: FH Aero, FH Aero Electric, the gas-powered FH Aero and FH16 Aero.
In the diesel and gas variants of the Volvo FH and FH Aero, it is possible to use renewable fuels. These are biogas, biodiesel and HVO diesel, which should further save on CO2.
Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, says in a press release that he is very proud of the result.
– I am so proud to see an external test confirming that our Volvo FH Aero truly delivers superior fuel efficiency, saves CO2 and operating costs for our customers every day.
The result is part of a series of recent accolades for Volvo Trucks. Roger Alm, director of Volvo Trucks, says it's like a hat-trick from the world of football.
– With the Green Truck victory, Volvo Trucks has a hat-trick. First, we were the only brand to receive five stars in Euro NCAP's first-ever truck safety test, then we became the largest heavy truck brand in Europe in 2024.
– And now the Volvo FH Aero is the most fuel-efficient truck in an independent test. I am so proud of all these tests.
