Volkswagen regrets – all electric cars must be redesigned

Volkswagen's technical chief Kai Grünitz now says that all of the brand's electric cars must be redesigned because drivers must 'love VW' again.

Volkswagen has decided to redesign all its electric cars. The new design and improved performance must 'tune' the electric cars onto a track that better reflects Volkswagen's vision, says the management.

– This style should be more related to what Volkswagen stands for, says Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen's technical chief, to Autocar .

The first step in this restructuring will be the launch of ID.2 All, which will take place next year. This model represents the beginning of a new aesthetic for Volkswagen electric cars, heavily inspired by previous Golf models.

Volkswagen's head of design, Andreas Mindt, has looked back at the brand's history to find the stylistic elements that are now resurfacing in the upcoming electric cars.

In the course of 2026, the updated ID models will also be introduced. The new models will feature improvements stemming from the development of the automaker's MEB architecture. According to Kai Grünitz, this means, among other things, lower battery costs and improved performance.

– The customers will see that there has been a change and a much bigger change than expected, says Grünitz.

A central part of Volkswagen's long-term strategy is the development of the SSP platform (Scalable Systems Platform). The technology behind it is intended as a response to competition from Chinese manufacturers and is to be introduced around 2028.

To promote the SSP project, Volkswagen has entered into a collaboration with Rivian, which involves an investment of nine billion kroner in a joint company. According to Grünitz, the collaboration will combine Rivian's technology with Volkswagen's expertise in car production.

– Their technology is closer to what we see in China. We combine that with our knowledge of building cars to a high standard. So I think it's a good collaboration, he says.

With this plan, Volkswagen hopes to regain its position among car manufacturers and to be able to offer electric cars that are more competitive and relevant in the future that the automotive industry immediately faces.
