Volkswagen refuses to give people in electric cars a wild discount

Last December, the German government withdrew all public support for electric cars. Since then, the car manufacturers have responded again with discounts. But now Volkswagen is withdrawing.

In general, Germans are buying far fewer electric cars after the country's government revoked a tax rebate last December.

Since then, car manufacturers have tried to retain electric car customers by matching the increased tax with discounts directly on electric cars. But now Volkswagen says stop.

Not directly to the discounts on electric cars. But to the size of them. Volkswagen still calls their offer aimed at motorists an 'environmental bonus'. But it has now become much smaller.

That's what Auto Bild writes.

Until the end of March, the car manufacturer offered a discount which was similar to the one the German government removed in December. In addition, there was a discount of 1,750 euros available.

Now only a discount of 3,750 euros is available. But this discount also has a short deadline. Volkswagen will already close down the option again this summer, more specifically at the end of June.

The latest sales figure also shows that interest in electric cars is plummeting in Germany. At least out at the dealers.

Here, one notes a drop in sales of 29 percent in the month of March. It is, however, better than in January, when sales fell by as much as 55 percent.

However, not all car brands are singing in the same direction as Volkswagen. Tesla has to run out of car stocks. That is why there is also a discount of up to 5,000 euros available from the brand.

At home, a political agreement from last year meant that otherwise planned tax increases on electric cars have been put on hold. However, it has also caused problems in the first months of 2024. Read more about it here .
