UN chief wants to ban all advertisements for petrol and diesel

Advertisements for fossil fuels must be as illegal as advertisements for tobacco, says UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

UN Secretary General António Guterres wants the whole world to ban advertisements for diesel and petrol.

At the same time, the 75-year-old Portuguese calls on the world's governments and media to refrain from money from the oil industry.

Guterres accuses the oil companies of 'distorting the truth, leading the public astray and inciting doubt when it comes to the climate crisis'.

The BBC writes that.

Some countries and certain cities have already introduced regulations that partially prohibit the oil industry from advertising its products. This applies, among other things, to in France, where it is forbidden to promote coal, petrol and diesel. Even hydrogen made using fossil fuels must not be presented to the public.

However, Rebecca Tushnet, who is a professor of constitutional law, has already said that such a ban will be difficult to enforce. Especially in the United States, where the right to advertise is protected by the Constitution's First Amendment to Freedom.

All in all, it may be difficult to ban fossil fuels altogether. Pieter Nota, who until last year sat on BMW's board, recently said that he expects one thing from the new EU parliament.

Namely, that the elected officials either scrap or postpone the otherwise planned ban, which in 2035 clears everything but electric cars and synthetic fuel from the road.

In fact, believe that it is downright naive to think that petrol and diesel will end up being banned.

– A new EU Commission will, I suspect at least, decide on a postponement or adjustment of the ban no later than 2026. It's just inevitable, I think, says Nota. Read more about it here .
