Electric cars are not the only way to achieve CO2 neutrality, says Toyota's chairman. Now the Japanese want to develop combustion engines that do not emit CO2.
– I love internal combustion engines. Their sounds and smells are irresistible. Some like electric cars. And others say now is the time for hybrid cars.
This is how Toyota's former director and current chairman Akio Toyoda began his speech at the Tokyo Motor Show.
During the speech, Toyoda, who is the former chairman of the Japanese car industry's interest organization, emphasized that 5.5 million people work in the country's car industry.
It is, says Toyoda, jobs he wants to protect. Therefore, it is necessary that the car brands, including Toyota, continue to develop on the internal combustion engine. Also so it does not emit CO2.

– Electric cars are not the only way to achieve CO2 neutrality. Let's refine the technology of the internal combustion engine! Let's start such a project, Toyoda said.
In his speech, Toyoda also mentioned that, on his initiative, the brand has already approved such a project. But Akio Toyoda also called for other car brands to join the bandwagon.
– To everyone who has made internal combustion engines until now, let's keep making engines. Everyone's help will continue to be needed. I will never let all the work put into the development up until now go to waste, Toyoda said.
Perhaps Toyota is interested in joining forces with Mazda on that development. At the same car fair, Mazda's top people also said that they will invest in the development of the internal combustion engine.
– The technical challenges we have to solve are not easy, but we hope to be able to take steps towards a new chapter, said Mazda director Masahiro Moro.
