Toyota, Subaru and Mazda promise to develop new fossil cars

New cars for new engines. The three Japanese car brands Toyota, Subaru and Mazda promise to develop new internal combustion engines.

The car manufacturers Toyota, Subaru and Mazda now promise to invest massively in the development of the internal combustion engine.

The partners told this in a press conference this week.

But instead of working against each other, the three Japanese brands will put a number of joint resources into development. However, it should not result in one engine technology, but in several from the different car brands.

Specifically, the idea behind the new joint project is that Toyota should spend time developing 'ordinary' four-cylinder engines, while Subaru throws love at the boxer engine and Mazda develops the Wankel technology.

The new thing is that the engines must be able to run on other and more than conventional petrol and diesel. The Japanese brands envision biofuels, hydrogen and synthetic gasoline/diesel being part of the equation.

In addition, both Toyota, Subaru and Mazda will develop electric motors in parallel to link it all together in a kind of hybrid solution. Something completely third to come out of the collaboration between the Japanese is physically smaller engines than today.

In this way, all three car brands will be able to make a car with a lower front than is the case right now. This, they say in agreement, will mean something for wind resistance and ultimately a reduction in the internal combustion engine's consumption.

The three Japanese brands call their new collaboration multi-track. None of them wants to bet exclusively on the electric motor as the only solution to the car industry's future challenges.

However, the cooperation between Toyota, Subaru and Mazda is not completely new. Because as early as 2021, they promised to throw money into the development of synthetic fuels. Porsche had and still has the same idea. And now Lamborghini says that it also wants to join.
