Thousands of Danish drivers are punished by absurd bills

There are no limits on how small amounts can be charged. At least not when it comes to tax collections from Danish drivers.

It is already expensive to be a driver in Denmark, but the state must get every penny out of the drivers' pockets.

Even if it means sending out letters with charges of just one kroner. Often it is less for periodic charges that were not paid exactly on time.

This is written by several media – among others Finance .

We have discussed the absurdly small amounts here at Boosted.dk. Among other things, a Flemming M. said on his LinkedIn profile that the state has sent him a reminder of DKK 0.07.

And it turns out there's a reason for that, although not a very good reason. There is no trivial limit for the amounts the state will collect from motorists.

– There are no minimum limits for the attribution of interest in the relevant rules on the collection of motor claims. This means that all interest amounts must be collected, says Tax Minister Jeppe Bruus (S) to Finance.

According to the Tax Agency, it typically costs the state DKK 1 to collect 50 ore, while it costs the state a whopping DKK 9.5 if the same amount is to be collected with a physical letter sent to the individual motorist.

However, these costs only cover what the state pays others to, for example, get a bill per letter. The Tax Agency's own costs are not included in the calculation.
