These car thefts are increasing dramatically in Denmark

New figures from the National Police show that the number of reported burglaries of goods vehicles and trucks has increased dramatically over the course of 2024.

Thefts from vans are a growing problem in Denmark. New figures from the Danish National Police show a significant increase in the number of reported thefts in 2024.

During 2024, the country's police departments received 4,235 reports of theft from trucks or vans. This equates to over 11 reports every day, and is an increase of 20 percent compared to the previous year.

This is shown by a review of the figures prepared by the insurance company Gjensidige.

The increase in thefts is worrying, especially because it often hits smaller businesses hard.

– We experience customers whose vans are empty of tools. And it's not just about us helping to replace the tools.

"They also have great problems doing their jobs, and therefore these thefts often lead to great costs for those affected," says Lene Rasmussen, claims director at Gjensidige.

Figures from the National Police show that the problem of thefts from vans is nationwide, but that the police districts around Copenhagen are particularly hard hit.

In addition, there is a slight increase in the number of reviews during the winter months.

According to Lene Rasmussen, this may be due to the fact that the thefts are often organized and that the darkness provides a better opportunity to work unseen.

To address the problem, Lene Rasmussen urges owners of goods vehicles and trucks to be extra vigilant and take precautions.

– It can be difficult to be completely safe, but it is always good to park in a well-lit place, and preferably close to residential areas.

"And we find that theft tags and DNA spray both have a deterrent effect and make it difficult to sell the stolen goods," she says.

It is important to be aware of the risk of theft and take the necessary precautions to protect your van and tools.
