The world's last brand new Saab was probably bought by a Dane. But now another one has appeared. In 36 years, the car has a short 125 kilometres.
The world's last factory-new Saab has traveled just 125 kilometers in 36 years. The car, a Saab 900 Turbo Cabriolet, never found an owner when it came to the US in the late 1980s.
And although it was recently put up for auction again, the current owner keeps the car. This despite a number of high bids.
The car was built at Saab's factory in Nystad, Finland. It was in 1988 as part of the special Springtime in Sweden Edition. Only 287 more cars were built.
One of the cars was sent to a Saab dealer in Connecticut. Despite its exclusivity and limited production, the car never found a buyer. It remained part of the dealer's display, where it sat for decades.
Last week the car was for sale on the auction site Bring a Trailer. The bidding round reached almost 60,000 dollars, corresponding to approximately 423,000 kroner.

However, the owner chose to reject the last bid as it was deemed too low for such a rare car. Comments on the auction site suggest that the three-speed automatic transmission may have put off some buyers.
The Saab 900 Cabriolet, especially the first generation, is considered one of the most iconic models from the now defunct car brand. The car came on the market 41 years ago.
It happened shortly after it was shown to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show that same year. Although the Saab 900 was immediately met with criticism, Saab managed to create a hit. Especially in the USA, where the four-seaters and the 'sporty character' fit in with the yuppies of the time.
The production took place in Finland. The same was the case for a number of other distinctive models from the brand. A total of 48,880 first-generation Saab 900 Cabriolet models were built from 1986 to 1993, many of which remain sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
Despite its potential as a collector's item, the unsold Saab must wait for an owner. Until then, it remains an extremely rare factory-new time capsule.
Speaking of the last 'real' brand new Saab and the link to Denmark. It is good enough. The car, a 9-3 Turbo from 2014, was sold in 2019 from the car brand's old factory in Trollhättan. Read more about it here .
