The whole city prohibits cyclists from speeding over 20 km/h

Until now, it has been the case in Frankfurt that motorists have had to slow down to around 30 km/h in the city centre. Now it has been reduced to 20 km/h – also for cyclists.

Motorists almost have to wheel around Frankfurt. In December last year, the city government banned speeds over 20 km/h on all side streets in the city centre.

Officially, it is being done to clear up the confusion that different speed limits can give drivers in the city.

Already on Friday 2 December, the first 30 km/h signs were taken down and replaced with 20 km/h. At the beginning of 2024, more signs went up in the city.

In addition, the city council will have converted all parking spaces on these roads into pedestrian crossings or pavements.

The only roads not affected by the new, lower speed limits are the city's main roads. Here it is still permitted to drive at 50 km/h.

However, cyclists and people on e-bikes should not feel too safe. Because although theoretically it will be easier for them to drive faster than the cars, there are also stalls for this kind of road user.

However, the Germans are far from the only ones who want to make life miserable for most people in traffic. At home, the city government in Copenhagen will be allowed to implement more bans on cars and speed limits. Read more about it here .

Conversely, a city like Odense is dropping the introduction of the so-called zero-emission zones. Life for motorists in the city is becoming increasingly difficult, however, because the majority at the town hall will ban speeds above 30 km/h in most of Odense.
