The Toyota GR86 usually runs around with Subaru's boxer engine. But in connection with the SEMA Show in the USA, Gazoo Racing has made an exception and given the car 300 horsepower.
Toyota has revealed the ceiling for a GR86 with 300 horsepower at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The car is a tribute to the brand's own history within the rally sport and is built with inspiration from the iconic Celica GT-Four.
– We wanted to evoke memories of legendary rally cars that enthusiasts have seen on rally tracks and in video games, says Paul Doleshal, General Manager for Motorsport and Assets at Toyota Motor North America.
To realize the vision, Toyota combined elements from two GR models. The starting point was a GR86 with performance package. But the biggest challenge was getting the G16E-GTS engine from the GR Corolla and the GR-FOUR four-wheel drive system in the car.
The engine from the GR Corolla is quite a bit taller than the GR86's normal boxer engine, which required extensive modifications to the chassis. For the same reason, a special subframe and engine mount had to be manufactured to create space for the engine and gearbox.

To adapt the car to four-wheel drive, the front suspension was changed with components from the GR Corolla, including wheel hubs, spindles and axles. In addition, custom-made threaded undercarriage and control arms were installed, and the steering was adjusted to give the right rally feel.
The result is a GR86 with a classic Castrol-inspired rally foil reminiscent of the Celica ST185 and ST205. The car is a modern interpretation of Toyota's rally heritage and marks the return of the WRC championship to the United States
All in all, the SEMA Show in Las Vegas is worth a visit. The huge fair holds everything an octane-pumping heart could desire. If you couldn't make it this time, or you just haven't been there yet, Boosted has luckily been by several times.
Like in 2021 when we caught Adam's show stopping of a BMW E30 M3 and wrote about the conversion. Even though the car was actually built for the fair a few years before. Read more about that project right here .
