Over 1,000 horsepower. That's what the next car from Mercedes-AMG has to do well with. But it's not because of some roaring gasoline engine.
To be an answer to the Lotus Eletre and the upcoming Porsche Cayenne, you need to have over 1,000 horsepower. At least according to Mercedes-AMG.
The car from Affalterbach is not only AMG's first electric SUV. It is also the tuner department's first in-house developed platform. No borrowing from the regular Mercedes program.
The SUV is expected to premiere sometime in 2027. And it's pretty good. But we wrote about the 'next AMG' a little further up in the article.
And that's – perhaps – a bit uncertain. Because according to Autocar, the Germans are planning a four-door sedan using the same technology. Presumably for a premiere sometime in 2026. But that's still associated with great uncertainty.
When it comes to size, the new super-mercer won't be the biggest. So not GLS-sized. But it won't be a GLE either. It's – again – right in between.
Even though Mercedes-AMG will only build electric cars in the future, director Michael Schiebe lives by the following motto: "AMG first, electric cars next".
That said, Michael Schiebe is the same director who believes that AMG customers don't buy a car from Affalterbach because of the engine. It certainly has nothing to do with the V8 engine, he says. Read more about it here.
While the tuning department still believes that electric cars are the only way, Mercedes has had to admit that the car type is not selling as expected. The brand's first mass-produced electric car was quietly dropped earlier this year, and for that, director Ola Källenius acknowledged that the Stuttgart brand will not only sell electric cars.
