The next Cupra Leon is ready, and the petrol engine is also gone, Seat and Cupra director Wayne Griffiths confirms in a new interview.
The next generation of the Cupra Leon will be an all-electric car. Although the Seat Leon will continue to be produced with combustion engines for some time to come, Cupra has confirmed that their version of the Leon will eventually be available only as an electric car.
That decision could spell the end for the Seat Leon, as Cupra potentially takes over the model name completely.
This is suggested by Seat and Cupra director Wayne Griffiths in an interview with Autocar .
The electric Cupra Leon will be built on the Volkswagen Group's Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). This platform is designed to support a wide range of future electric vehicles from the VW Group.
"When the electric Leon is launched, it is expected to become Cupra's fourth fully electric model," writes CarBuzz. It will thus join the Tavascan, Raval and Born in Cupra's growing range of electric cars.
While there aren't many details yet about the upcoming Cupra Leon, the SSP platform suggests it will likely share batteries and powertrain options with other electric cars in the VW Group's portfolio.

In Denmark, Cupra currently only has two electric cars on its program. The Tavascan SUV is a problem for the Volkswagen Group, however. The car is built in China and will be affected by the higher tariffs that the EU introduced on electric cars last year. Read more about it here .
