The government may be on the way with more help for people in electric cars

People in electric cars must have more support. At least there is something to suggest that with Tax Minister Jeppe Bruus' (S) latest announcement.

There have never been more electric cars on Danish roads than there are right now.

At the same time, the sales figures for the month of May show that every other new passenger car in Denmark runs on some form of electricity. Having said that, it is not enough.

At least not if the message that Tax Minister Jeppe Bruus (S) has made in an email to Finance is to be taken seriously.

The government believes that there are too few electric cars in Denmark. And there are indications that taxpayers will once again have to worry about getting more of them on the roads.

Thus, the Minister of Taxation declares himself 'ready to' look at whether the reimbursement scheme for electric cars is the most appropriate. Here, Jeppe Bruus alludes to the money electric car owners can get back for charging their cars from a home charger.

The SVM government will now, says the minister, also look into whether this should apply to the 84,000 Danish home owners who have invested in a solar system.

Right now, solar cell owners can use the electricity in the house that their own solar cells have produced, without paying electricity tax of 0.95 ore per kilowatt hours to the state.

Electric car owners already get away cheaply. An agreement from December last year means that a majority in Christiansborg exempts the vast majority of electric cars from registration tax.

Only when the electric cars cost more than DKK 430,000 will the state get its share of the pie. Even with the current agreement, the prices of electric cars seem to take a decent jump as early as 2026, because the tax rebate on electric cars must end in 2035 at the latest.

And there are indeed additional charges on the way. Because already from 1 January 2025, all trucks on Danish roads must pay a so-called kilometer tax. Something Jeppe Bruus is proud to have achieved. Read more about it here .
