The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 is resurrected after 37 years

500 cars were built in the months between May and July 1987. 37 years on, the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 is being resurrected. Unfortunately only very briefly.

37 years and a month after the last Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 left the assembly line, the car is being resurrected. Unfortunately, this only happens once.

Only one so-called 'Carbon Piranha' is to be built. The car is a rebuild of chassis number 148 out of the 500 cars ever built back in 1987.

The project's code name is also 'Vision 148' as a small appreciative nod to the original car. However, it is small with original parts, because the entire body is replaced with one made of carbon fiber.

And it's not just something you just do. First, the car must be broken down into atoms. After this, virtually all parts must be 3D-scanned and rebuilt from recycled carbon fiber. Obviously not the actual engine and wheels, that's for sure…

Cosworth will take care of the engine. Again, in many ways you can say. How much you can get out of the 2-litre, turbocharged petrol engine is still unknown. The same applies to the weight of the car itself.

But already now they are looking for the car to be kept under a weight of 1,000 kilos. For comparison, the original weighs 1,207 kilos.

– Our point of view is to give fans the chance to see the RS500 in a different way – with a modern twist. Even those who weren't born when the original car was built have a connection with cars and modern ideas, says Vision 148 founder Ian Howe in an interview with Top Gear .

For Cosworth, the 'new' car also means something very special. It is to help celebrate the company's 65th anniversary.

– We know that the Cosworth brand has a passionate fan base. And what better way to celebrate an icon both on the road and on the racetrack than through the Vision 148 RS500 project, says Cosworth managing director Nick Greenway.

You only have to look at a few ads to find out how much interest there is in old Cossie cars. In Norway, for example, there is a very, very virgin Sierra Cosworth for sale at the moment. And that with a creepy price tag in the windshield. Read more about it here .
