The EU forces all drivers to follow the Danish license plate rule

In Denmark, motorists have been able to download the digital road map onto their phones for the past four years. Now the same must happen in all other EU countries.

The EU is working on a new choir card directive, which, among other things, sets out that digital choir cards will become a requirement throughout the EU.

The directive sets new requirements for drivers in all member states. In Denmark, we already have experience with digital choir cards, which have been downloaded 1.8 million times in the last four years after their introduction.

The country holding the presidency, Hungary, wants a quick decision in the matter. Sweden is in favor of the proposal and proposes a validity period of 15 years, with a reduction to 5 years for people over 70. In addition, Sweden wishes to maintain the possibility of obtaining a physical choir card as a supplement.

According to the EU directive, the digital choir card must be implemented no later than four years after its adoption, but individual member states can choose to introduce it earlier.

A report from the Digitalization Agency from 2023 shows that the digital road map in Denmark has been downloaded by 1.8 million drivers and is used 51,000 times a day.

Although many Danes have welcomed the digital choir card, there is still uncertainty about how a common EU system will work in practice.

Among other things, it is unclear what technical requirements will be placed on citizens and how to ensure that the digital choir card works reliably in all member states.
