The entire windshield will be a screen in all new BMWs

BMW CEO Oliver Zipse has said he believes large screens in cars will be banned. But now the windshield in all new BMWs will be just that.

BMW has announced an ambitious plan to integrate a new technology called Panoramic Vision into all future car models. This technology transforms the entire windshield into a screen that displays information for both the driver and passengers.

The BMW Panoramic Vision, which was presented at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, uses the entire windshield and the strip at the bottom of the windshield to display information.

The brand announced this in a press release .

The system is based on the new BMW Operating System X, which according to BMW is one of the world's most comprehensive infotainment systems.

"High technology means highly intuitive operation – a quarter of a century of pioneering work and technological leadership in operating concepts has been channeled into the new BMW Panoramic iDrive," says Frank Weber, BMW AG Board Member for Development.

And he adds:

– The basis is the new BMW Operating System X. With this advancement, we are giving one of the world's best and most comprehensive infotainment systems even greater capacity and once again setting the industry benchmark for multimodal interaction.

"Starting with the first series-produced Neue Klasse model at the end of this year, the new BMW Panoramic iDrive will be an integral part of all future BMW models."

The system projects information onto a black printed surface in the lower part of the windscreen, visible to all passengers. Important driving information is displayed directly in the driver's field of vision above the steering wheel, and the content can be customised via the central display.

The BMW 3D Head-Up Display is offered as an option, integrating navigation and automated driving information into the driver's field of vision.

A new multifunction steering wheel with active haptic feedback allows the driver to control the system without taking their eyes off the road. The buttons have a relief-like surface that makes them easy to find.

BMW Operating System X, based on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack, enables collaboration between BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW 3D Head-Up Display (optional), central display and multifunction steering wheel.

One thing is what BMW plans to do. Another thing is what they are allowed to do. Oliver Zipse, who is the director of the whole thing in Munich, also believes that large screens in cars will be banned. Read more about it here .
