The electric car will never be the only legal thing, says Bosch

Stefan Hartung, chairman of the board of Bosch, believes that it is impossible that all cars in the future will only run on electricity.

Bosch is much more than household appliances and tools.

The German industrial giant has an entire department that deals only with the automotive industry. And here, chairman of the board Stefan Hartung does not give much to the idea of electric cars.

In any case, electric cars will not be able to handle all transport needs in the future. In fact, no one will be able to do without the internal combustion engine, believes the chairman of the board.

He says this in an interview with the German media The Pioneer .

Stefan Hartung acknowledges that the sale of electric cars – and thus the number of them – will increase. But at the same time, he says that the electrification of the car fleet will take a long time. Also longer than many people think.

– We will see a further increase in electric car sales. But it will move in waves. We also hear from the car manufacturers that the increase will be slower than first expected.

Right now, 90 million new cars are built worldwide every year. And replacing them with something that only runs on electricity is not something you just do, Bosch believes.

– If we were to immediately convert everything we currently have in production, it would take around 16 years to replace the entire fleet.

– It will take more than twice as long, at least 30 to 35 years, to electrify all cars worldwide. But it will never be like that. Not all cars will be electric in the future, says Stefan Hartung to The Pioneer.

Bosch is not the only one treading carefully when it comes to the electric car. At BMW, you won't hear any talk of a release date for either the diesel or the petrol car.

Toyota says the electric car will never get 'more than 30 percent of the global market', and now Mercedes is also hesitant to put an end date on anything. Read more about it here .
