A significant part of the current in the charging stations around is wasted when an electric car is connected to charge. Volvo's electric cars are among the worst, survey shows.
There is waste and energy loss in most cases. Now a new investigation from the German ADAC shows that this also applies to charging electric cars.
The organisation's mapping of the electricity waste is based on just over 90 electric cars which are currently on the market.
And although the cars' average range has increased from 123 kilometers in 2010 to 393 kilometers this year, there is still an energy loss from the charging station itself.
In ADAC's measurement, an average of 14.5 percent more current was used in the charging station than actually ended up in the car's batteries. Common to all the cars in the test was that they were charged with a 22 kW charger at 23 plus degrees.

But some electric cars are far above average when it comes to energy loss directly from the charging station. When ADAC connected a Mini Cooper SE to the charging box, a third (30.1 percent, ed.) of the energy disappeared without charging the car at all.
The Volvo XC40 has a charge loss of around 20 percent. But it's worse for cars like Dacia Spring, Mustang Mach-E, Nissan Leaf, MG 4 and Xpeng G9.
While the best cars – including the various Volkswagen ID. models – made it through the test with a loss of around 8 percent.
According to ADAC, the main reason for the energy loss must be found in the fact that it is necessary to convert the current from alternating current (AC, ed.) to direct current (DC, ed.) in order to be stored in the electric car's batteries.
The Germans therefore believe that electric car owners should factor in the actual charging loss in their car's consumption when they look at how far they can actually go on the same charge.
The best performing electric car was Aiway's U6 Prime. But there aren't very many other than the current owners who can use it for anything. Aiway's production is at a standstill while the brand tries to save itself. Blue. by fleeing out of China.
