THE CONCEPT CAR – BMW TURBO On the occasion of the World Exhibition in Munich, BMW presented the BMW Turbo concept car in 1972. A mid-engine sports car designed by chief designer Paul Bracq with gull wings and 280 hp from a turbo version of the 4-cylinder in-line engine from BMW 2002. Only two copies were built. . They were probably forgotten, if the head of BMW Motorsport didn't suddenly need inspiration for project "E26". BMW M1 AND MOTOR SPORTS BMW built 48 examples of the BMW M1 for racing. The Procar version, built to Group 4 regulations, produced around 470 hp with conventional tuning, weighed 1,020 kg and had a top speed of 310 km/h. Popart artist Andy Warhol also hand-painted #76, which featured in Le Mans. When the Procar series stopped in 1981, the M1 was put into Group 5, a Special Saloon class with virtually no restrictions. With the biturbo, the straight six delivered up to 1,000 hp.
