Tesla owner stole electricity – ended up burning the car

A Tesla Model S owner in Tijuana in northwestern Mexico burned his Tesla when he wanted to steal power for the car directly from a power pole.

That should go without saying. After the purchase of a Tesla Model S, it must not be connected directly to a power pole when the battery is flat.

But not everyone is that smart. At least not in Mexico, where a Tesla Model S owner from the city of Tijuana is now completely without a car.

It burned up after he connected the car directly to one of the city's electricity pylons. A trick that reportedly already costs the Mexican utility companies around 2.5 billion US dollars, equivalent to 17 billion Danish kroner in electricity every single year.

According to the authorities, no one was injured when the Tesla owner drove his car. Still, this is the first time that firefighters in the city have responded to a Tesla fire in this way.

On social media, users apparently have nothing but scorn left for the man, who has now lost his Tesla to the flames.

– One thing is to connect a small light bulb and perhaps an electric flare to an electricity mast every now and then. But trying to charge a Tesla in that way is something else entirely, reads one of the nicest-toned comments.

Other media in Mexico report that the car belongs to an American tourist. But it is not confirmed. The house, which also caught fire when the charging of the Tesla went wrong, was not inhabited by anyone, according to the authorities.

The news about the Tesla fire comes shortly after the car brand Tesla decided to pause the construction of a car factory in Mexico.

At about the same time, Tesla in Germany could confirm that an otherwise planned expansion of the factory, located on the outskirts of Berlin, will not come to fruition. Read more about it here .
