Tesla loses a decisive case in the Supreme Court

Tesla had been given a so-called free process to take a dispute over license plates all the way to the High Court in Sweden. But now the car brand has lost.

Tesla has lost a case in Sweden's Supreme Court.

The dispute was, and still is, that Tesla wants the Swedish Transport Agency to hand out number plates directly rather than via the 'middleman' PostNord.

The court rejected Tesla's request and chose not to give the company permission to appeal the case further.

The case began when Tesla challenged the Transport Agency in Norrköping District Court, where the car brand was initially refused.

Subsequently, Tesla tried to have the decision overturned in the Court of Appeal and later in the Supreme Court, but the company had no luck here either.

The High Court concluded that there was insufficient basis for taking up the case. In its decision, the court writes: "The Supreme Court has reviewed the material. No reason has been found to grant leave to appeal."

The background to the conflict is a trade union blockade against Tesla, which has affected the supply of license plates to the company.

The transport workers' union Seko has been behind the blockade, which aims to put pressure on Tesla in a dispute over working conditions. To circumvent the blockade, Tesla has used alternative address solutions to continue to register and sell their cars in Sweden.

However, Seko has tried to prevent this practice by pushing for a further tightening of the rules.

Despite Tesla's resistance, the blockade has not yet been lifted, but it has not stopped sales of the company's cars either.

The Model Y remains among the best-selling cars in Sweden, indicating that the company is currently finding ways to deal with the challenges, despite the union's efforts.

The judgment from the Supreme Court is considered an important signal in the matter, but it also gives rise to continued legal and practical discussions about how such blockades can be effectively enforced and how companies like Tesla legally navigate this kind of thing.
