Swedish Audi disappeared without a trace – was found on teletext

Almost 40 years ago, Sven-Erik "Svempa" Bergendahl built an Audi Quattro 30 centimeters wider. The car then disappeared without a trace, only to appear on teletext.

Almost 40 years ago, Swedish Sven-Erik Bergendahl and his friend Jan Richter built an Audi Quattro 30 centimeters wider. Mostly because the two got the car for free.

The car was later sold and disappeared without a trace for the two friends for several years. The two had really only intended to rebuild the doors a bit. But it ended up being a rebuild of the entire car.

Svempa tells Carup, who has sniffed out that the car is now for sale in connection with an auction at English Collecting Cars .

It shouldn't be possible otherwise. Because the car had disappeared. Probably because quite a lot happened around the Audi when it was rebuilt.

– There was a lot of commotion around the car, and we went around doing some stunts, but then we sold the car, and since then it has changed hands a few times, says the car builder.

It was only four years ago that another car enthusiast came across an advertisement for an Audi Quattro on something as atypical as teletext. And although the car had been painted black in the meantime, there was little doubt – it was the car that Svempa and Jan rebuilt back then.

The new owner has put some effort into getting the car back to the condition it was in when the first conversion was completed in the 1980s. The work is actually still ongoing, and according to Svempa and Jan's original ideas.

But now Audi has to move on anyway. It happens on Sunday, when the auction ends. At the time of writing, the car has been bid on 8 times, sending the price up to £20,250. This corresponds to 179,000 Danish kroner for the German with 77,409 kilometers on the odometer in Candy Green Metallic.

When the car was rebuilt in 1987, well over 2,000 hours were spent on the project. And even then it was noticed. The Swedish car magazine Bilsport featured the car in its columns in the October issue that year.

Today, Sven-Erik "Svempa" has sold his trademark "Svempas AB" to Scania. Because as he says – "you get a little old".
