Study: Toyota owners are the worst at washing their cars

How much love and care a car gets depends a lot on the owner. A study shows Toyota owners are the worst.

There are those who wash their car every weekend. Then there are those who only sacrifice a car wash when the car is to be sold.

And then there are those who just don't bother with that kind of thing. In the last category you find Toyota owners. And not only that. Toyota owners are generally the worst at maintaining their cars.

This is according to a study conducted by Kantar Sifo. In the study, conducted by Swedish company KVDCars , owners of 15 car brands were asked to rate their own ability to maintain their car on a scale of 1 to 10.

Drivers were asked to take into account parameters such as car washing, servicing and general maintenance. Here, Audi owners believe they do best. A full 67 percent of these drivers believe that their car care skills are an 8 out of 10.

After that, Volvo, BMW and Hyundai owners joined the fray. While we find Toyota owners at the very bottom of the list as the bottom line.

According to the study, the bottom ranking may be due to the fact that Toyota owners choose their car to a greater extent than others based on a principle of rationality, rather than pure 'driving pleasure' and other emotions in that context.

Renault owners don't put much love into their cars either. Surprisingly, Mercedes owners don't spend much time on their cars either. That is, other than behind the wheel.

There is also a wide range in age. A full 62 percent of drivers between 56 and 79 years old think they take good care of their cars. That figure is only 39 percent among younger drivers between 18 and 34 years old.

The proportion of drivers who rate their car maintenance skills as '8 out of 10' (in percent):

  1. Audi: 67%
  2. Volvo: 57%
  3. BMW: 56%
  4. Hyundai: 55%
  5. Volkswagen: 53%
  6. Ford: 46%
  7. Opel: 46%
  8. Peugeot: 46%
  9. Nissan: 43%
  10. KIA: 41%
  11. Saab: 41%
  12. Mercedes: 39%
  13. Renault: 39%
  14. Toyota: 35%
