Spotify shuts down your device – here's how to get your money back

Spotify was betting big on the little Car Thing. A device for older cars without modern infotainment. But the idea was dropped again.

Spotify has already stopped development and support for the company's first piece of hardware, the little Car Thing.

Technically, the player, which was and is intended for cars without modern infotainment, is junk today. And Spotify also says that the device should just be thrown away.

However, that leaves several Car Thing owners with some electronics that are useless. And it has been that way since December 9, 2024. But if you have one of the devices, you can actually get your money back.

The music giant writes this on its website.

But you have to be quick. Because on January 14th of this year, Spotify will stop offering this option again. Right now, however, you still have the option for just under two weeks.

The streaming service's customer service can be requested for a so-called refund. The only thing the music giant needs to see in return is proof of purchase. That is, a receipt for the purchase or a bank statement confirming that you invested in a Car Thing.

The small, physical device cost $89 or 580 kroner new in February 2022. But that's already gone. Spotify has not announced whether the device will get a replacement.

But there are a number of other companies that build radios that look somewhat period-typical on the outside, but are state-of-the-art on the inside. You can get both Android Auto and Apple Car in many popular cars from the 80s. Smart, right?
