Scientists demand a fourth color in traffic lights

American researchers are now calling for the possibility of a fourth color in traffic lights. The idea is to improve traffic with self-driving cars.

You know green, yellow and root.

But you may soon be introduced to a fourth color. At least when it comes to traffic lights.

In the USA, a group of researchers from the University of Michigan and North Carolina State University are calling for the light controls to be given a new color. That is, just in case.

It's all due to the self-driving cars that researchers expect to see on the roads. With the new color, white, a signal is sent exclusively to self-driving cars. Namely that they must follow the anchoring car.

– When we get to the intersection, we stop if it's messy.

– And we sing if it's serious. But if the white light is on, you just follow the choir in front of you, says researcher Ali Hajbabaie to the AP news agency .

It is not the first time that researchers come forward in the media and ask to be given the white light (not to be confused with the white cut, ed.) continued.

What is new, however, is that the researchers do not pay much attention to the color of the new light. White need not be the right solution. But with modern technology, it can also be a lamp that flashes in another monster, emphasize the researchers behind the proposal.

The important thing is that the solution must be universal. So the signal is unmistakable, regardless of which road you are on. That said, Ali Hajbabaie doesn't expect anything to happen anytime soon.

Or tomorrow or next year for that matter. It requires that 40 to 50 percent of the traffic is self-sustaining. And we are far from there.

For example, Mercedes has only recently been given the 'green light' to experiment with self-driving cars at level 3 on public roads in Germany. Read more about it here .
