Sales plummet – petrol stations remove special petrol

The ethanol fuel E85 is dying out. At least in Sweden, where several gas stations have already removed the fuel and replaced it with HVO100 diesel.

Renewable fuels are not going away. But now it seems that the E85 petrol is being replaced by something else, namely HVO 100 diesel.

At least in Sweden. A law from 2005 means that filling stations must have at least one type of fuel from a renewable source in the pumps.

But demand for E85 petrol has plummeted. In 2013, 170 million liters of ethanol were sold in the country; last year that figure was down to 20 million litres.

Circle K in Sweden confirms this to Carup .

Several other energy companies tell the same story, and E85 has already disappeared in several places. Right now, there is far more economy in synthetic diesel made from, for example, animal fat. The so-called HVO 100 diesel. In Sweden alone, motorists bought 200 million liters last year.

However, the energy companies do not believe that E85 will disappear completely. But the demand will probably not be the same as before. Among other things. because the consumption by pouring ethanol into the tank is, as a rule of thumb, 1.3 times higher than regular petrol.

In a country like Brazil, however, ethanol is still a huge hit. Here, the fuel is made from sugar cane, and it works for several car brands, including Volkswagen and Toyota. In fact, Brazilians don't really care about electric cars. Read more about it here .
