Russia is reviving another car brand from the Soviet Union

In 2022, Russia revived the Moskvich brand. Now another Soviet brand is coming out of the grave. This time it is about the Volga.

It was a piece of junk when the brand was assembled in its time. But now the Russian Soviet brand Volga is being resurrected anyway.

The brand, which went into the grave in 2010, is being revived after 14 years due to sanctions. Sanctions from the West and its allies, which have caused various car brands to flee Russia.

Today, the Russians are in a situation where nine out of ten cars in the country are either built in China or made under license with Chinese technology. If the Putin regime has not seized entire factories, as has happened to Citroën, for example.Read more about it here .

But back to the Volga. The brand was closed by the Swede Bo Andersson, who was then director of the GAZ group in 2014. At the time, Volga built the Chrysler Sebring under license.

But now it is time to revive the brand. It happens again under license. This time from – you guessed it – China. This time from the Changan Group. On the other hand, Volga's model program is expected to consist of just a little more than one model.

A sedan and two SUVs are already planned. All cars, however, will use the same 1.5-liter gasoline engine with four cylinders and 188 horsepower. In China, the cars on which the new Volga will be based are fitted with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It is unknown whether the Russians will have the same luxury.

Russian media reports that the new Volga models are to be built under license in Russia with a certain number of components manufactured precisely in Russia.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, the Russians are supposed to be ready to throw the equivalent of DKK 4.5 billion into the relaunch of the Volga.

Whether the population likes it is another matter. But there are indications that this is far from the case. Read more about it here .
