Renault also regrets – buttons return

Renault claims it will 'radically rethink' the way the brand makes cabins. But this does not mean that the buttons will disappear, says design manager Gilles Vidal.

Renault is planning a 'new and radical' interior in the brand's cars. At least if you ask design manager Gilles Vidal. But that doesn't mean the buttons disappear.

On the contrary, says the design manager. A 'hierarchy' must be created in future Renault models, so that buttons and touch screens as well as panels can work side by side with each other.

– We will introduce ground-breaking solutions in virtually all areas, including in the cabin and with user interaction, he says.

Vidal highlights the futuristic cabin of Renault's Emblem as an example. The car, which otherwise runs on hydrogen, is currently only a concept. But it is expected that the French will get serious about the idea within three years.

That's what Autocar writes.

The Emblème concept is equipped with a minimalist design, where a large, curved display dominates the dashboard. Screens and buttons give access to all the car's functions. In other words, navigation and entertainment for air conditioning and all other settings.

Renault has not yet released details on which specific models will be affected by the new design changes. However, it is expected that they will be introduced gradually as Renault launches new electric cars in the coming years.

The French brand is just the latest in a long line of automakers to back off when it comes to touchscreens. Hyundai has also had to announce that customers were wrong when it comes to the need for buttons in cars. Read more about it here .

Even earlier than that, Volkswagen had to bow out. In December last year, the Germans said that the physical buttons will return in all new cars. It happens after a storm of customer complaints about the brand's way of using touch screens and panels.

Numerous studies have also shown that touch screens both constitute a danger in traffic and steal the drivers' attention. Attention that they should keep on the road.
