The new Renault 5 is in many ways a hope for the French car brand. But at FDM, they believe that security has been turned down. A new crash test also shows that.
The new Renault 5 disappoints in crash tests and only achieves four stars in the latest test from Euro NCAP.
According to FDM, the result reflects a lack of ambition in security. Although four stars is not necessarily bad, automotive technical editor Soren W. Rasmussen believes that Renault should have done better.
The association writes this in a press release .
The Renault 5, which also has a sister model in the Alpine A290, does not reach top marks overall. The car's collision safety is assessed as only adequate, and among other things the lack of an airbag between the front seats drags it down.
It's a feature many other manufacturers are now seeing as standard in their models. The built-in safety systems in the Renault 5 are also not quite up to par, which has contributed to the car not achieving the maximum five stars.
FDM notes that this is disappointing, especially as Renault has previously demonstrated the ability to deliver safer cars.
– Four stars is basically not a bad result according to Euro NCAP's strict requirements. When there is still reason to be disappointed with the Renault 5, it is because Renault should be able to do better.
– Both in relation to collision safety, but also to the important safety systems. They have shown that with other models. The ambitions with the new Renault 5 are great, and therefore it is a shame that this is not also reflected in the car's safety, says Soren W. Rasmussen.
Where the Renault 5 struggles to live up to expectations, the Volvo EX30 delivers a strong performance in the same test. The model gets five stars and is praised for its high collision safety and ability to protect vulnerable road users.
Although the car received criticism for its interior at the launch, safety is the priority. For example, there is an airbag between the front seats, which the Renault 5 lacks. However, it is pointed out that certain functions in the EX30, such as the door monitoring system, need to be adjusted, as they are initially disabled.
