Recalling 116,000 cars because seats can burn up

Under the passenger seat in 116,000 Mercedes GLE and GLS models there is a cable for a 48-volt connection that can shake loose and start a fire.

Mercedes is now recalling 116,000 GLE and GLS models because a cable under the front passenger seat can shake loose.

There is enough electricity in the cable to potentially cause a fire if the accident were to happen.

Fortunately, Mercedes has not yet received feedback about personal injuries or accidents as a result of the error. But the error may be there.

This is written by the US traffic safety authorities , the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration .

Mercedes itself says that the cars that may be problematic were built between 2019 and 2024. The fault may also be in the top model Maybach GLS600.

According to the publicly available information about the recall, the US authorities believe that Mercedes did not tighten the problematic cables well enough when the cars were on the assembly line.

Therefore, today the cable can shake loose. Mercedes also says it is good enough. The high-voltage cable can easily slip out of its place.

So far, 31 customers have complained about the problem between August 2022 and November last year. However, the repair is relatively simple, it says.

Mercedes' technicians must now look at all of the possibly problematic cables in the 116,000 cars. And if it has to be rushed, technicians will tighten the cable again, because the owners will be allowed to drive on.
