Reborn Mercedes 190 EVO II costs 6.4 million kroner each

The HWA Evo is a tribute to one of the most legendary Mercedes models in the brand's history. But it costs a bit. To be precise, 5.3 million kroner – each.

German tuner HWA has just released the first images of the HWA EVO – a modern recreation of the iconic Mercedes 190 E 2.5-16 EVO II.

The new model, the HWA EVO, marks the company's entry into the restomod segment, where classic cars are updated with modern technology and design. Only 100 examples are planned to be built, making the car extremely exclusive.

HWA was founded in 1998 by Hans Werner Aufrecht, a key figure in motorsport who also helped develop the original EVO II.

The company is based in Affalterbach , close to AMG, and has previously created racing cars such as the Mercedes CLK-GTR and CLK DTM AMG. HWA EVO builds on this experience and uses the Mercedes 190 (W 201) as the basis for their first road car.

The HWA EVO is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 biturbo engine with sump lubrication, which delivers 450 hp and 550 Nm of torque.

For customers who want more power under the hood, an upgrade called the Affalterbach package is offered, which increases output to 500 hp and a top speed of 300 km/h. The standard version has an electronically limited top speed of 270 km/h.

The price for the unique model starts at 849,660 euros incl. VAT, which is approximately 6.4 million kroner. The first customers are scheduled to receive their cars in 2025. But interested buyers need to act quickly. Most of the cars have already been purchased and paid for by the new owners.

Technical specifications:

  • The base model is based on the Mercedes 190 (W 201)
  • 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo
  • Power: 450 hp (500 hp with Affalterbach package)
  • Torque: 550 Nm
  • Top speed: 270 km/h (300 km/h with upgrade)
  • Weight: 1,360 kg
  • Limited to 100 copies

HWA has been meticulous with the details of the EVO project. The chassis is being almost completely rebuilt, with 75 percent of the original parts being replaced with newly developed components.

This doubles the body's rigidity compared to the original. HWA has also developed a completely new aluminum subframe for the car.

The engine's placement has also been optimised, with the front axle moved five centimetres forward for better balance and weight distribution. All horsepower is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual, 'dogleg' gearbox.

The interior offers a mix of modern features and classic design. Functions such as power windows and climate control are controlled via physical buttons to avoid an overly digital feel. The cabin also includes Alcantara-covered details and a numbered badge on the gear lever indicating the car's place in the limited production run.

"The HWA EVO is much more than just a restomod. To realize our vision, we have invested extensive resources in design, technology and supplier cooperation," says Gordian von Schöning, technical director at HWA, to Bild .

For those yearning for a modern take on a classic with a touch of motorsport flair, the HWA EVO is a rare combination of history and cutting-edge engineering. But with only 100 examples made, it's a car that remains out of reach for most. Unfortunately.
