People in electric cars pay DKK 26,000 too much in taxes

The Norwegian Electric Car Association feels sorry for its members with company cars. They – that is, the members – pay 26,000 kroner too much in taxes, it is said.

26,000 kroner.

That's what Norwegian company car drivers pay too much in taxes. And that's only because they own an electric car. At least that's how the Norwegian Electric Car Association interprets the text.

The association writes this in a press release.

– We cannot continue with systematic over-taxation of company car users who choose electric cars, says Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association.

For 93 members, the Electric Vehicle Association has calculated the actual benefit they have from having a company car that they also use privately.

The calculations show that the state's standard rule assumes, on average, a benefit of 61,000 kroner higher than the actual costs of owning a car.

According to the association, this means that electric drivers with company cars paid on average between 21,000 and 26,000 kroner too much in tax in 2023 because the state's calculation model is misleading.

– The calculation basis for the benefit taxation is outdated and does not reflect the current cost picture of car ownership.

"The taxation also doesn't take into account that charging is much cheaper than fuel costs. You end up paying tax for benefits you don't get," says Bu.

According to the association, the madness doesn't stop there. Company car owners have already been told that their tax base is far too high.

A court has even told the tax authorities this. But according to the electric car association, the Norwegian authorities refuse to comply with the decision, which applies to the actual costs of maintaining a company car.

Instead, the owner must be taxed based on some standard forms. And thus he is 'forced' to pay far too much in taxes as long as he has a company car.

However, the authorities do not always give in, as the judiciary says. Here in Denmark, for example, the Danish Motor Authority has had to bow to the motorcycle community after a court ordered it.Read more about it here .
