Organizer will withdraw from rally: "Electric cars are the problem"

The audience stays away when there are electric cars on the track. Therefore, a Swedish Rallycross organizer is threatening to withdraw.

At first, the organizers behind the World Rallycross race in Höljes, Sweden, thought that the crowd was missing because of the weather.

But an investigation has since shown that there were few spectators for the 2023 edition of the rallycross race, because the class now consists of electric cars.

And the audience simply doesn't want to watch it. Therefore, the organizer of the race, which has been held in Höljes for several years, is also threatening to withdraw.

– The public thinks that the electric cars sound too small and there are too few, says the lobby's head of competition Morgan Östlund to Sveriges Radio .

A solution must have been found anyway. Because Höljes is not just on the calendar in World Rallycross in 2024. The entire lob series begins in Sweden in Höljes.

The organizers promise that there is now a 'mix' of cars on the track. And that some of the total of 16 cars that drive around the track will run on petrol.

Whether the public cares to watch different technologies compete against each other is still an open question. At least in Sweden. Lobet is sung on the weekend 5-7. July.

The Rallycross Championship is not the only series with electric cars on the track that receives criticism. Despite what the international motorsport organization FIA calls record high viewing figures, there is little interest in the electric formula class Formula E.

If you ask the former Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica, there is not much about the electric formula cars either.

– For me, a racing car has to make noise.

– I have a bit of a mantra. It might not be good to say in public. But… (driving an electric racing car, ed.) is a bit like having sex with an inflatable doll, says Kubica in an episode of the Gurulandia podcast. Read more about it here .
