Norway sets a record – 92 percent of new cars run on electricity

There will be no such thing as a ban on new diesel and petrol cars from New Year in Norway. Maybe because it is abundant. 92 percent of all new cars in Norway run on electricity.

92 percent of all new cars in Norway now run on electricity.

And this even though electric cars – and even from a political point of view – are deprived of several of the advantages that would otherwise make Norwegians choose them. Read more about it here .

Because even though July 2024 was the worst month for new car sales in Norway for more than 30 years, electric cars weighed heavily on it. Out of the estimated 6,456 cars sold in July, 5,933 of them run exclusively on electricity.

This is shown by figures from the authority Statens Vegvesen .

The pure petrol and diesel cars can only rise above a market share of 3 percent if you add the sales together.

When there have not been more new cars in Norway recently, according to several experts, it is due to a general economic uncertainty. An uncertainty that has already cost the life of one of the country's largest car dealers.

Blue. because it has become much more difficult for Norwegians in general to borrow for a new car. And those who have obtained a loan pay so much in interest that some break their necks and in reality cannot afford it at all.

The past year clearly shows how much car sales have declined. Norwegians buy 14 percent fewer new cars than just one year ago. If you look at the Nordics as a single market, it is actually only in Denmark where car sales are progressing.

Parts of that explanation must be found in the massive support for the electric car. And according to the SVM government, there may be even more on the way. Read more about it here .
