Nissan develops paintwork that cools cars down

Nissan has developed a coating which cools the car down if it – ie the car – is parked in direct sunlight. The aim is to relieve the air conditioning system.

Nissan has developed a new coating, the purpose of which is actually to keep the temperature in the cabin down. In this way, there is less need for the air conditioning system.

The Japanese themselves call the process that the paint makes on the car, jet carburizing. It is said to refer to the human body's ability to dissipate heat completely naturally.

On the other hand, Nissan is far from the first to think along these lines. Because the technique is already in use on the heat shields, which i.a. NASA and the European ESA equip its spacecraft with

Similar paint is also used to coat building structures here on Earth. Nissan is also not responsible for all the development work itself.

The new paintwork is the result of collaboration with a specialist who develops a product from a secret, synthetic composite material. On the other hand, the varnish has properties that are not normally found in nature.

The most important element in the varnish are the so-called microstructure particles that react to and with light. In other words, the particles reflect energy – i.e. the heat – away from the car and back into the atmosphere.

Nissan states that the project has been underway since 2021 and that the results so far are 'encouraging'. However, the Japanese do not say anything about or when the paint will possibly be on the market.
