New figures: The electric car has fewer breakdowns than the fossil car

According to the German answer to FDM, ADAC, newer electric cars have fewer faults that equate to breakdowns in traffic than similar diesel and petrol cars.

It may well be that petrol is in some cases cheaper than electricity for the electric car. Read more about it here .

On the other hand, owners of newer electric cars can look forward to more trouble-free kilometres. This is the conclusion of the German ADAC in a new report .

Electric cars, which are registered for the first time in 2021, have on average 3.6 fewer faults that can be linked to breakdowns in traffic, per 1,000 cars. At least if you compare with cars with a combustion engine.

According to ADAC, there are an average of 2.8 crashes per 1,000 electric cars that are 3 years old. While that figure for petrol and diesel cars is 6.4 crashes per 1,000 choir robes.

The Germans say the most common thing drivers need roadside assistance for is faulty or flat batteries. The second most common problem requiring roadside assistance in 2023 was engine problems. While electrical problems took third place.

When things go wrong for electric cars, the owners should not, however, expect to get off as cheaply as the operating costs are generally for electric cars.

Electric cars are very expensive to repair. Also more expensive than the diesel and petrol cars. However, things don't often go wrong in an electric car, even when you take into account that the car type is outnumbered on the roads.

This is shown by a survey that the German insurance companies' trade association GDV is behind. However, there is more than one reason why electric cars cost more to patch together.

– The repair costs for electric cars are much higher. On average, they are between 30 and 35 percent higher than for comparable cars with internal combustion engines, says director at GDV Jörg Asmussen in a press release.

It is most often the batteries in the electric cars that send the workshop bill skyrocketing. Next come the costs of repairs or the replacement of the often very complicated technology in the electric cars.
