A new study shows that one in three drivers do not use their turn signals at all. Or at least do not do so correctly. The biggest problem is at roundabouts.
While 6 out of 10 don't know how to use the turn signal, one in three chooses not to use it at all. And if it is used, it is done incorrectly.
This is shown by a new study conducted by M Sverige, the Swedish equivalent of FDM.
The study is based on responses from 6,000 drivers. And it shows that failure to use turn signals or incorrect use of them is quite common among drivers. This is a matter of concern for the Motorists' Association.
According to M Sverige, the most worrying results are seen at roundabouts. Here, 36 percent of drivers fail to use their turn signals. Many seem unsure about the rules.
– Many people think you should flash your lights when entering roundabouts, but this is not necessary because there is only one direction of traffic entering the roundabout.
– However, it is important to signal when changing lanes or leaving the roundabout, says Heléne Lilja, Head of Communication and Society at the National Federation of Motor Vehicles in Sweden, in a press release .
At regular intersections, drivers are a little better at using their turn signals. But 20 percent of them still choose not to use them at all. And this even though it can have major consequences for both the driver and other traffic.
– It is shameless not to use turn signals. By being visible in traffic, we reduce the risk of accidents and contribute to a safer environment for everyone on our roads, says Heléne Lilja.
Not signaling when changing direction is not only dangerous – it can also result in fines. According to traffic regulations, turn signals must be used when changing lanes, turning or otherwise changing direction.
Not flashing can cost the driver 1,000 kroner in fines if the police see it. Or rather, they don't. Yet drivers have more than a little difficulty understanding the rules.
Another thing is that drivers have at least as much difficulty driving in the winter. Or at least doing so in a condition where the car is legal. This article from January last year is a frighteningly good example of this.
