New figures: Every fourth motorist has the same problem on the roads

One in four drivers has trouble keeping their eyes open due to fatigue. This worries the Council for Safe Traffic.

Over the past year, every fourth motorist has experienced fatigue during traffic, so severe that they have come close to closing their eyes. This appears from a report from the GF Foundation, which is based on a survey carried out by the analysis agency Human Engage.

In the survey, approximately 3,000 people with a driver's license were asked if they had had difficulty keeping their eyes open while driving in the past year.

Here, a quarter of the respondents answered the question in the affirmative. Managing director of the Council for Safe Traffic, Jakob Boving Arendt, states in this connection:

– No one should be in such a hurry that you sit with heavy eyelids behind the wheel, because then there is a risk that you will not get there at all.

Tiredness behind the wheel is not only a personal risk, but also a danger to other road users. Jakob Boving Arendt emphasizes that it is important to take the signs of fatigue seriously, and that drivers should take a break if they feel sleepy.

– You have a responsibility for yourself and others when you drive a car, so it is necessary to react to fatigue and take a break, instead of betting that you can manage without it, reads a press release .

Driving a car in a state of fatigue can have legal consequences if it affects one's ability to drive the vehicle safely.

According to the Council for Safe Traffic, it is illegal to drive a car if you are so tired that it affects safety. This is supported by a judgment from the Hojesteret in 2023, where a man was disqualified from his license for three years after he drove a car without getting enough sleep. The man was involved in a solo accident as a result of his fatigue.

These data and cases point to a problem that affects many drivers. It emphasizes the importance of being aware of your own condition when you get behind the wheel, as fatigue can have serious consequences for road safety.
