New figures dispel the myth about electric cars – they don't burn out more often

It's pretty much settled, but figures from Sweden emphasize again that electric cars do not burn more often than their petrol and diesel counterparts.

The Swedes do not believe that there is any greater risk associated with having electric cars on board the ferry. At least not with regard to the fire hazard.

And now a report from the Swedish emergency authorities MSB emphasizes that there is no reason to be more worried about fires in electric cars either.

Because although the emergency services both here at home and in Sweden have taken extra precautions when electric cars catch fire, the risk is not greater for that. In other words, the electric cars take off.

Not even though there have been more electric cars on the roads. The Swedes rely on figures that say that in 2021 there were 24 fires in electric passenger cars. That figure was 23 fires the following year.

Thus, the Swedes compare themselves to figures from Denmark. In a larger investigation from 2022, the Danish authorities looked at car fires on our roads since 2018.

This has then been compared with fires in fossil-fuel cars within the same period. And according to the National Emergency Management Agency, the conclusion is clear. There is nothing to come after.

There is no reason to fear more frequent fires in electric and hybrid cars. The fact that a fire occurs in electric and hybrid cars is a rarer phenomenon than in diesel and petrol cars.

However, you must pay particular attention to the fact that fires in electric cars are violent when they occur. A fire in an electric car is also very difficult to put out. An electric Audi, for example, burned down a house in Hirtshals last year. Read more about it here .
