New figures: Danish cars are already greener than expected

The Climate Council's report, which is a projection and so-called climate status, reveals a downward adjustment in the emissions of cars on Danish roads.

Danish cars are greener. At least greener than the Climate Council had expected.

This is revealed by the so-called Climate Status and Projection 2024 report, which was published this week.

In an assessment note , the Climate Council, which the government uses as an advisory body, must eat its own previous predictions in the form of significant downward adjustments to Danish cars' CO2 emissions.

It is simply going much faster to get electric cars on the roads than first thought. In September 2020, for example, the former social democratic government had an expectation that by 2035 there would be well over a million electric cars on the roads.

But in the new assessment note, the Climate Council writes that: " emissions from road transport are adjusted down significantly in the Climate Status and Projection 2024 compared to last year's projection ."

" This is because an increase in the replacement of fossil fuel vehicles for electric passenger cars, vans and trucks is expected. In addition, a significantly reduced cross-border trade in fuels is expected on the Danish side of the borders. "

However, the picture can change many times, and even if the current government, with a political agreement, keeps the tax on electric cars calm. The agreement is based on the assumption that there will be no significant price difference between petrol and diesel cars already in 2027.

That premise doesn't seem to hold water. Partly because a large number of car brands – including Mercedes – have said that they do not know when the electric car will be able to compete with the diesel and petrol cars on price.

However, this is not the same as the absence of cheap electric cars. Volkswagen has just confirmed the brand's aim to build an electric car for DKK 150,000. However, it will be without Renault's help. Read more about it here .
