New battery for electric car gets an absurdly long warranty

Chinese CATL has developed a new electric car battery. The technology is so sure that a ten-year or 1,000,000 kilometer warranty is provided.

Chinese Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) is now going after Toyota when it comes to electric cars. At least on the battery side.

Like the Japanese, the Chinese will now promise that the battery will last for at least 10 years or for the first million kilometers.

Together with the also Chinese Nio, CATL will even launch a battery pack that should be able to last up to 15 years. So on the warranty.

Tectrans, as the new battery is called, is of the type that the Chinese, until recently, would only call a prototype. But now it is believed that the technology is so durable that a series production can be made.

For the battery with the 10-year factory warranty, it sounds like 85 percent of the original capacity remains when the warranty expires. In comparison, Tesla today will only promise an 8-year warranty on the battery and that with a 70 percent capacity.

However, CATL has to make some compromises. Because the new battery pack does not focus on performance but rather on longevity. This also means that the batteries are initially aimed at buses and light trucks.

The battery, which is being developed in collaboration with Nio, will, however, be used in passenger cars. Both battery packs are made up of so-called LFP chemistry, and previous investigations have shown that this type should be able to maintain a capacity of at least 85 percent for 16 years.

But CATL says 'only' 10 years – at least in passenger cars at the present time. So maybe it's not that impressive after all?
