Motorists evaded DKK 739 million in speed booths

An investigation shows that motorists are widely using temporary or manipulated number plates to get around speed bumps.

Yes, a speeding ticket is annoying. But unless there has been an error on the part of the police, it must therefore be paid. And certainly not everyone has the same desire or will for that.

A new survey from the United States reveals that these drivers try various creative tricks to get around the speed bumps.

However, not so much after the trap has been sprung. In fact, many cheat while the 'expensive' photo is being taken. This shows a settlement from the authorities in New York.

This is what the city government in New York writes in a press release .

In as many as 22 percent of all cases where a motorist was flashed by a speed camera, the otherwise conclusive evidence had to be discarded because the number plate could not be read.

327,714 of the times the police had to stop the speeding ticket because the number plate was covered. In a further 748,468 cases, the license plate was either temporary or manipulated to such an extent that it could not be deciphered.

According to the authorities, this means that motorists have cheated on more than one million speed bumps. Something that amounts to 108 million dollars, corresponding to 739 million Danish kroner.

However, it is not only the Americans who have problems with drivers who more or less creatively try to beat a speeding ticket.

License plate manipulation is also a phenomenon here in Europe. This is even though drivers risk up to DKK 11,000 in fines and their cars being impounded. Read more about it here .
