More than one in three Germans switch from an electric car to a petrol car

34 percent of German drivers who have chosen an electric car have regretted it so much that they have gone back to the petrol or diesel car.

Germany is Europe's largest car market and thus also the most important for electric cars. But that doesn't mean that all Germans like electric cars.

New figures from the insurance company HUK Coburg show that 34 percent of electric car owners in the big country went back to petrol or diesel cars last year alone.

The company analyzed 14 million insurance policies to arrive at the figure. For 2023, 90 percent of those who had chosen an electric car in Germany were loyal to electricity as 'fuel'. It is far from that today.

But the insurance company also has an idea as to why it suddenly looks completely different here a year later. This is particularly related to the tax support that the German government removed suddenly and with immediate effect in December 2023.

The lack of tax support for electric cars means that motorists are now switching between petrol/diesel cars and electric cars and back again to the same extent as was the case in 2021.

Blue. of the 4,200 people that HUK Coburg asked about their attitude to electric cars, 46 percent answered that they can appreciate the type of car. But 47 percent believe that the electric car is only 'a little good' or 'not good at all'. 7 percent answered that they still have doubts.

Furthermore, just 18 percent of German drivers answered that they can imagine buying an electric car at a later date than today. Something completely third, the insurance company found, is that younger people are generally more positive towards electric cars than their older "species".
