Ministry of Taxation: How 9 out of 10 drivers cheat

According to a new report from the Danish Tax Agency, there are errors in 9 out of 10 cases when Danes rent something out. For example, their cars.

The Danish Tax Agency reveals massive errors among Danes with income from rental via platforms. 93 percent of cases had errors in 2024. Something that led to record-breaking extra bills.

The Danish Tax Agency has found errors in 93 percent of the audited cases concerning income from the sharing economy in 2024. The extensive audit has resulted in collections of 21 million kroner. This is a record high amount for the agency.

This is stated by the Ministry of Taxation in a press release .

Many Danes use digital platforms to rent out their own assets. This applies to cars, boats and homes, for example. The digital platforms, also called capital platforms, make it easy to mediate contact and payment between landlord and tenant.

Renting out through these platforms can provide an extra income for the household. The car or home is no longer just an expense. It can also become a source of income.

However, the income must be reported correctly to the Danish Tax Agency. In many cases, this is not done automatically by the platforms. Citizens are therefore responsible for reporting income in certain cases.

The lack of automatic reporting increases the risk of errors. It can also open the door to deliberate fraud or black economy. The Danish Tax Agency's latest audit results confirm this risk.

Sharing economy and tax rules

The figures from 2024 show a very high number of errors. A full 93 percent of the checked cases contained errors. This led to the issuance of charges for approximately 21 million kroner.

Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund comments on the results. He acknowledges that Danes have embraced the sharing economy. Many earn money via digital rental platforms.

"Unfortunately, the inspection results show that many Danes, consciously or unconsciously, are not good at reporting rental income to the tax authorities," says the minister.

He emphasizes that it must get better.

"Of course, everyone must play by the rules and pay the taxes they are required to," adds Rasmus Stoklund.

The rules for taxation of rental income must be complied with by everyone.

The Danish Tax Agency has significantly intensified its controls in recent years. Since 2020, more than 5,000 controls have been carried out in this area. The controls focus specifically on income from capital platforms.

Future control and guidance

In 2024 alone, around 1,200 inspections were carried out. The agency has gradually built up solid experience in the area. This makes them better able to target their inspection efforts.

The Minister of Taxation acknowledges the agency's experience and targeted control. However, he believes that errors in more than nine out of ten cases are far too many. This is an unacceptably high level, according to the Minister.

Therefore, income from the platform economy will continue to receive great attention in the future. Both from the Danish Tax Agency and from the Minister himself. Control in this area will continue with undiminished strength.

At the same time, the Danish Tax Agency continues to provide guidance to citizens. The guidance is intended to help people understand the rules and pay tax correctly. The information can be found on the Danish Tax Agency's website, skat.dk, among other places.

The Danish Tax Agency is continuously adapting and improving the guidance. The goal is to give citizens the best possible conditions for complying with tax regulations. Correct tax payment is essential for the economy.

In addition to the national effort, Denmark is also participating in strengthened EU cooperation. The cooperation concerns taxation and the exchange of data between the countries. Data on rentals via digital platforms is shared between the tax authorities of the respective countries.

This data exchange is part of the EU Directive DAC7. The purpose is to reduce the risk of cross-border tax evasion. It is intended to ensure fairer and more uniform taxation in the EU.

Owning a car entails many expenses, but as the article shows, it can also become a source of income via platforms based on the sharing economy.
