Mercedes drops its first electric car in the deepest silence

Similar to the X-Class pickup, Mercedes has dropped the EQC electric car without telling anyone about it. The car was the Germans' first attempt to sell an electric car to the whole world.

Not everything Mercedes steers turns to gold. And now the Germans are once again taking the consequences. Quietly, the EQC electric car has been dropped.

The last Mercedes EQC was assembled at the Germans' factory in Bremen in July 2023. However, no one outside Mercedes has been able to confirm that production has actually been dropped.

However, the media Motor1 can now do that.

The media reports that Mercedes has confirmed to them that production of the EQC model has stopped completely. The car was first shown in 2018, and deliveries to customers began the following year.

All this shortly after Audi had presented their first electric car, the e-tron. A car that today has so few buyers that Audi is trying to save it with a name change.

However, the car's lack of success means that it will most likely go out of production prematurely. Which could also mean that Audi closes its entire factory in Belgium. It is one of the last two car factories left in the country at all. Read more about it here.

Back at Mercedes, the farewell to the EQC does not mean that a car of that size is completely out of the Germans' range. In fact, it is rumored that Mercedes is working on a rival to the Tesla Model 3. A car that will be approximately the same size as the current C-Class.

Like the EQC, it was expected that Mercedes will refrain from building a replacement on a platform for electric cars only. In fact, Mercedes' chief executive, Swedish Sten Ola Källenius, has made the decision to drop a completely new platform for electric cars.

Instead, Mercedes will use some of the money – DKK 105 billion – on the development of hybrid cars. Volkswagen has apparently had the same thought. Because in Wolfsburg, even more money will be spent on installing electricity for diesel and petrol. Read more about it here .
